Poppy Poppy Poster
They Gave Away All Of Their Tomorrow's For Yours And Mine"
In Memory of the Fallen - Share a Poppy
The story of the Poppy begins long before the Auxiliary
adopted the flower as a way to help veterans. It began during WW1 when a
doctor and soldier, Lt. Col. John McCrea, of the Canadian army, found out a
friend of his died in battle. McCrea wrote one of the most famous war poems,
"In Flanders Fields", to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the line
of duty.
The Poppy grew wild on the battlefields of Flanders Field.
It became a symbol of sacrifice endured by the soldiers. Like the blood that
was shed there, its brilliant red bloom became a sign of hope and renewal
for those who lived and walked away. And, for those who would never leave,
it became a perpetual memorial to their bravery.
The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the Poppy as its Memorial Flower
at the first convention held in Kansas City, October, 1921.
The American Legion Auxiliary pledged 100% of the profits from the
Poppy distribution to the Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation program to
assist veterans and for Children of veterans.
The true meaning of the Poppy is, it's an emblem of faith; faith which
is being kept with all who died through service to the living.
The Memorial Poppies are made of red crepe paper, by hand, by disabled
veterans. Veterans receive pay for each Poppy made.
Please
remember we distribute poppies
we do not
sell them. DISTRIBUTE
means to voluntarily give a gift showing respect for services rendered.
Distribution of Poppies is handled entirely by volunteer workers, serving
without pay.
Place Your Orders Early, -
Poppy order form. Forward your
order to this Chairman before December 1, 2009 in order to insure receipt on
time,
accompanied by check made payable to
Department of New York, American Legion Auxiliary.
All orders must have a street address to
be
delivered. NO PO Box number or RD
number.
Check your orders upon arrival and store poppies in cool dry place. All
contributions are to be used for Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation and
Children and Youth projects.
Units with less than minimum orders are encouraged to join with another
Unit when ordering poppies.
Contact Legion Posts to place Poppy orders. This will increase Poppy
orders and the Poppy distribution to the public. It also gives the public
the opportunity to pay tribute to all who died in service.
Auxiliary members should be prepared to answer questions concerning the
Poppy Program.

This
small red flower
made of crepe
Reminds us, our soldiers coffins draped
“Red badge of courage” worn
By their comrades maimed by war.
Amidst the
red; dots, green and black
Life was taken, hope given back.
All for one and one for all
These “Warriors” answered
The sacrificial call.
Now the
“Poppy”
made across our state
Helps our veterans pain dissipate.
It brings healing, health and release
To wounded families who need peace.

REPORTING
One of the most important responsibilities of
Unit Committee Chairmen
is to report the activities and work
on their programs.
This comprises all of the work done by the more than 50,000 members in
our Department.
The Unit Chairmen report to the
County Chairmen, who in turn
report to the Department Chairmen.
The Department's report to National is
the factor that makes the
outstanding reports at the National Convention.
Chairmen are encouraged to enter all contests. |
