Membership

I am delighted to be serving as your Membership Chairman again this year. I am also so very excited to be able to announce to you that National has lowered or "leveled the playing field" so to speak in regards to membership quotas for each Department. Our membership goal has decreased by 2,811 members this year. As your "Cheerleading Coach", I am very encouraged by this attempt to give our Department a chance to reach 100% goal this year. If we are ever going to make goal, this is the year to do it. Our Department President Carol (our Cheerleading Captain) is also very excited and will be "cheering" her way through the Department of New York and encouraging all the "fans" (our members) to get involved and on board with this endeavor. You will be hearing Carol's cheer throughout the year. "We've got spirit, yes we do, we've got spirit, how about you?"

Be a part of the TEAM-because "Together Everyone Achieves Membership" and I know we can do it this year.
Goal is with-in our reach!

National has suggested that Units plan a 2 or 3-day weekend Membership Drive in their neighborhoods. Just think of the possibilities of having every member of your team (Unit) solicit new members. Your work and the achievement of "goal" could be totally accomplished in one weekend.

Many times our members are just waiting to find their "niche". If either a current member or a perspective member shows any interest in one single program/committee area, give them an opportunity to start something new-let them lead the way with their ideas. Do not discourage them by saying "We tried that, it didn't work!" We always tend to underestimate the capabilities of our members. We must remember that our Units outcome is up to us and if we stifle growth and change, we become stagnant and will eventually lose members and charters.

Another membership suggestion might be to obtain a list of Posts in your County and check to see which Posts do not have a Unit association. This is a golden opportunity to charter a new Unit for your County. Speak with the Post Commander and determine if there might be interest in chartering a new Unit. It might be just what they need to expand and grow their services to that community.

Don't wait for potential new members to come to you-GO TO THEM!! Be prepared to think differently and take more pro-active steps for change.

I look forward to the membership segment at Mid-Winter Conference on January
25-26, 2008. It will be a membership learning experience you won't want to miss.

  "Membership Quiz"  PDF file

For those of you who were in attendance at Mid-Winter conference, you took part in the “Membership Quiz” during Saturday morning’s session.  I had multiple requests for the distribution of the specific questions used in the quiz, so I am issuing this bulletin with both the questions and answers. Please feel free to use this as an educational resource tool for your Unit members.

Attn. Membership Chairmen: The Quiz is on page One & Two of the PDF file. You can print as many pages as needed of the quiz to distribute to the members. The correct answers are listed on page Three.

Printing Tip: To use only one page for the Quiz, click print page 1 only, reinsert it into your printer so it will print on back of page 1, click print page 2 only - you will now have one page printed on both sides.
