Education
"TEAMWORK IS
THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS"
Webster defines “Education” as the process of
educating or teaching to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of
students. And the word “Education” comes from the Latin e-ducere –meaning
“to lead out”. Together as team players we are here to help create the
future leaders of our Country. Students of all ages have minds eagerly
waiting to explore the unknown and acquire a vast world of knowledge. We
must let our youth know of all the opportunities that we, the American
Legion Auxiliary, have to offer and show them support in every way. Let us
strive to BEE the teachers and guide our youth to great expectations.
SCHOLARSHIPS: The American Legion Auxiliary realizes the importance of
providing our youth with the support and varied scholarships to make a
difference in their lives and our future. Please take a few minutes and scan
over the scholarships that are available to them. Call your local school
guidance counselor and set up an appointment to make them aware of our many
scholarships. Also explain how our Empire Girls State program can help a
student with her college education. Remind your local schools how important
our children are to our future.
REMEMBER: the deadline for applications is MARCH, and only
fully completed applications with all the necessary signatures will be
considered. Please read the rules carefully, so often there is a
disqualification due to incomplete forms or missing signatures.
“NEED A LIFT”: A number one handbook in scholarship and financial aid, this
handbook covers information from the financial aid process to all types of
scholarships, grants, and loan opportunities. This handbook includes
internet websites and University profiles, as well as federal and state
sources for financial aid. This booklet is available through
National Emblem Sales or online at
www.legion.org Please stress this information to the guidance
counselors or perhaps you can offer them one! Remember to include this
useful information guideline to your Empire Girl State candidate.
“A GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS”: This is a brochure to help parents plan
for their child’s education. National Emblem Sales has several booklets and
brochures available for varied needs. Send for a catalogue and review all
the material for Americanism, and how our government works. Get involved!
NATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK: November 15 - 21, 2009. Visit the National
Education Association website www.nea.org
for ideas and events planned during this week. This is a ideal time to
inform your schools of Boys/Girls State, the Oratorical/Essay contests, and
our Scholarship programs.
Thank
You Card for Educators. Let us all send a "Thank You" during, "
National Education Week" to an educator, show them how much we
appreciate what they do for the Youth of our Country!!!
CAREER EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT: This is a necessary tool for our teens of
today. It is a perfect time to get involved and help them explore their
options. Many schools are looking for volunteers for Career Day and school
job fairs. Discuss our Auxiliary scholarships and Boys/Girls State program.
LITERACY: “READ ACROSS AMERICA”: This is an NEA program to help excite our
children to read, but children need to know how to read. Check out this
website and see where you can help a child to learn this skill. Begin a
Unit, County, or District Volunteer Reading Group. Take a child to the
library – have your Junior members plan an outing together to the local main
branch of the library. Remember "Teamwork is the Key to our Success".
VETERANS IN THE CLASSROOM: An American Legion program that links our
children to our Veterans and to our heritage, a sorely needed program to
educate our children of the sacrifices our veterans endured and are still
enduring to secure our freedoms. Veterans are the living history of our
nation and what greater way to teach the importance of Memorial Day, Flag
Day, and Veterans Day. Help your Post to initiate a American Legion Family
program. Conduct a joint Veteran’s Day program at the local school.
MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM: The National Association for Music Education has
launched a four year program to return patriotic music to our schools. The
American Legion is a supporting organization to this project.
View the website:
www.nationalanthemproject.org and how you can help your schools.
“PACT” (POST, AUXILIARY AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER: This is an Education
Handbook that is a comprehensive and informational guide to co-ordinate
programs at Post and Unit levels. This valuable handbook is available
through National Headquarters/Americanism publications.
