Bronx
County proudly endorses Barbara A. Corker for the office of Second Vice
President, Department of New York, American Legion Auxiliary for the
2011-2012 administrative year. Born and raised in the Bronx, she is a
32-year member of The Throggs Neck Memorial Unit #1456 through the
eligibility of her late father, George T. Farrell, who served in The
United States Army during WWII. Barbara is married to her husband James
for 32 years; they have two grown children and two granddaughters, all
members of the Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion Family. She was
active in the PTA during her children's school days. Barbara served her
community for several years on the NYPD Precinct Council, Throggs Neck
United Veteran's Day Parade Committee in the beginning years as well as
the Community Board while she resided in the Throggs Neck Community. From
1988-1995 Barbara worked for the Parkchester South Condominium as a
supervisor and secretary to the President of the Board of Directors. From
1995-2001 she was employed by the NYPD where she performed administrative
secretarial duties. Currently, Barbara is a Real Estate Associate in
Dutchess County where she resides with her family since 1996. She is
active in her local community.
At the
Unit level, her experience in the Auxiliary includes serving on several
major committees. She is responsible for revitalizing the Junior Auxiliary
in her unit in the 1980's where she held that committee for several years.
She also served several terms on the Finance Committee and Executive
Board, served as Secretary, Children & Youth Chairman, Membership
Chairman, Sergeant at Arms and Constitution and By-Laws Chairman for the
Unit. Barbara was Unit President four terms and is currently a member of
the Finance and Audit Committee. Barbara served as chairman for several
fundraisers on the unit level.
At the
County level, Barbara served on all major committees. She served as County
President for two terms and has assisted with the Holiday Gift Shop.
Currently, she serves as the County Education Chairman and a member of the
Finance and Audit Committee.
At the
District/Department level, Barbara served as First District Vice President
in 2000-2001, 2003-2004 and 2007-2008. In 2008, she received the Helen
Klimek Gavel for Membership and had the honor of being a Department Page
at the 2008 National Convention. She served as First District President in
2001-2002, 2004-2005 and 2008-2009. In 2009 her efforts resulted in
national recognition when awarded the National Award for National Security
for Best Overall National Security Program Activities in the Eastern
Division. She has served as Department Chairman for Cancer Awareness,
Education and National Security. Currently, she serves as Veterans Affairs
and Rehabilitation Chairman, a member of the Warriors Family Assistance
Program and 3rd Vice President. Barbara is a Certified Leadership
Instructor, and attended the 2010 session of Empire Girls State as a
Housemother. She also attended the Awareness Assembly in Washington D.C.
for the past three years.
Barbara will be the first candidate from Bronx County to run for the
office of Second Vice President. We are confident that Barbara will
continue to provide the Department of New York with her outstanding
dedication of service to The American Legion Auxiliary.
