The American Legion Family

Department of New York

is proud to announce the candidate for National Commander

Fang A. Wong

Fang A. Wong Special Operations Specialist with L3 Communications, ILEX Systems is our Immigrant of the Day. Fang A. Wong has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to his community as a member of senior leadership in the veterans’ organization,
"The American Legion".

Wong was born in China and came to the United States in 1960. He entered the U.S. military in 1969 as an enlisted soldier. Wong's distinguished military career spanned 20 years and included a 25 month long tour in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendations and Achievement Medals, and Republic of Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals. He retired from active service in 1989 as a chief Warrant Officer-3.

Wong's contributions within the American Legion include becoming Commander of the New York County/First Legion District, Department of NY Commander, National American Legion Vice Commander,  and other volunteer positions. Notably, his legion post was the closest one to Ground Zero, site of the 9/11 disaster in New York City. He and his Post assisted in organizing and providing relief support and translator services to the community in need after the tragedy.
Fang Wong is a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Comments
Many Chinese and other Asian American immigrants served and continue to serve in the US military today. Yet, we rarely hear about them. Thank you for featuring Warrant Officer (ret.) Wong as one of your immigrant of the day. I hope he will be a proud inspiration for the immigrants of today looking for a way to serve our great nation.

New important letter from Bob Morrill

To:   The American Legion Family of New York State and Friends

Subject:   The Election of Fang A. Wong as National Commander

Greetings,

In less than two short years, the Department of New York will have the honor of nominating an outstanding Legionnaire to the high office of National Commander of The American Legion. Fang A. Wong is a man of high integrity and character, who has devoted his entire adult life to serving his country, both in the military and as a civilian.

When Fang takes the oath of office as our National Commander at the Minneapolis convention on September 1, 2011 it will mark the first time in thirty-one years that a New Yorker has had this honor. It will also mark the culmination of a two year campaign to raise the funds necessary to achieve a first class campaign and election. $350,000.00 will be needed to achieve our goal. While this sounds like a large task, states as small as Idaho and Iowa have met the challenge with flying colors. We can do the same if the entire New York American Legion Family works together. How can you be a part of this history making effort? Allow me to make a few suggestions;

Ø      Organize The American Legion Family in your post, county and district into working groups. Select a leader for that group and notify me who that person is and then go to work on a project that will raise money for the campaign.

Ø      Talk to business leaders in your community and get them involved.

Ø      Organize one or more fund raisers in your area. Keep in mind that most of the funds needed for this campaign will be needed in the first year.

Ø      Consider a personal donation as well as a donation from your post, unit, or squadron.

Ø      Join the campaign committee by filling out and returning the "Committee Worker Profile"  form.

Ø      Keep updated on what is going on with the campaign by frequently viewing the Department American Legion web page at www.ny.legion.org and clicking on the Fang A. Wong for National Commander link. Similar pages are on the Auxiliary and SAL web pages.

Time will be set aside for donations on Sunday morning January 24, 2010 at the Mid Winter Conference in the Desmond Hotel, Albany, NY or you can send donations to the address listed above. There will be a brief committee meeting for all interested people on Saturday afternoon January 23, at 4:30 PM in High Street Room #30 at the Desmond Hotel. Please come prepared with any fund raising ideas and plans you may have.

Thank you for considering our request to get involved. Your support is needed and appreciated.
Please feel free to contact me at 518-463-2215 ext. 19 or robert@nylegion.org should you have any questions.

Yours for a successful campaign,

Robert L. Morrill PDC
Campaign Chairman
