Empire Girls State College Credit
Recommendation Program
The American Legion Auxiliary,
Department of New York offers an opportunity to all Citizens of Empire Girls
State to earn three (3) college credits while completing their High School
senior year. We are the only Department to offer this program to its
Citizens.
When a former Citizen attends
College the following year they could have three (3) credits already logged
onto their transcript. The average cost for one (1) college credit today is
approximately between $300 and $500. We are offering this great opportunity
for only $100 and a little bit of work. (see below)
The American Legion Auxiliary Empire
Girl’s State College Credit Recommendation Program is a part of the National
Program on Non-collegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI) of the New York
State Board of Regents. National PONSI evaluates courses offered by
non-collegiate organizations nationwide and makes recommendations on their
comparability to college level courses. These recommendations are published
in a Directory, which is distributed to every college and university in the
United States. College and university officials use the Directory as a
guide in granting college credit to the individuals who successfully
complete the described courses.
As a citizen
of Empire Girl’s State, you may receive recommendations for three (3)
college credits under the program described above. To receive the
recommendation, you must register and complete the following requirements on
or before the dates listed below.
-
Attendance at Empire Girl’s State
for the entire session.
-
Completion of a certified internship of
40 hours in government or political affairs.* The internship may
be completed at any time following the Empire Girl’s
State session. It is suggest that the internship be set up as soon as
possible. The student must submit a description of the proposed
internship to the Registrar for certification by the College Credit
Recommendation Committee. Internship proposals must be submitted on or
before October 1, 2012.
-
Completion and submission to the
registrar of the following two written assignments:
-
A self-directed learning log based
upon the internship experience and the week at Girl’s State. This
should be six to ten pages in length, doubled spaced with one (1) inch
margins and should describe and analyze the experiences encountered
during the internship. You must submit a letter confirming your 40 hours
internship with a description of your duties during the 40 hours. The
letter must be from the person in charge of your 40 hour service.
Section 3a is due on or before January 31, 2013.
-
An 8 – 10 page research paper on a
current public policy topic in New York State or local government. The
research paper should be doubled spaced with one (1) inch margins. A
bibliography of appropriate resources is required as part of this
assignment and integration of each citation should be evident with the
paper. Please include total number of hours spent on the research
paper. Section 3b is due on or before March 31, 2013.
*As
stated, the completion of a certified internship of 40 hours in government
or political affairs is the recommended choice. The American Legion
Auxiliary, Department of New York, recognizes privacy laws. We also realize
that an internship in government or political affairs may not be possible
because of the privacy laws. Therefore, additional options will be accepted
for the internship. Some examples of internship options include but are not
limited to:
For those interested in the environment, the Department of
Environmental Control (DEC).
For those interested in working with children in need, the
Department of Social Services.
For those interested in working with the elderly, local
nursing homes or New York State Veterans Homes or Hospitals.
For those interested in law, local District Attorney or
Public Defender’s offices.
These are just a few samples of options. Please remember, placement should
in some way enhance and build upon the Empire Girl’s State experience and
does not relegate the participant to menial clerical tasks, i.e., filing,
“just” answering the phone, etc.
When you have the 2011 Citizens speak at your meeting this
fall please ask them if they are participating in this wonderful
opportunity. If not please encourage them to do so and inform them it is
not too late. They must send the completed registration form, with
non-refundable fee of $100 to: Juanita Lochner, Registrar, American Legion
Auxiliary, Department of New York, 112 State Street – Suite 1310, Albany,
New York 12207.
Should you have any questions regarding an option to the
internship please feel free to call one of the names listed below.
