Department Awards 

Rules for Department entries:

  1. Entry must be typed, double spaced, not to exceed 1000 words, unless otherwise noted under award instructions.
  2. Entry must be in narrative form and placed in a folder.  Pictures, newspaper clippings and other materials may be included.
  3. All entries must include a cover sheet with the name of the award entered, name of the Unit/County, name and address of the Unit/County Children & Youth Chairman, name and address of the County President and the number of members in the County.  The number of words should be noted in the lower right hand corner of the cover sheet.

New this year - Mary Anne Casadei Award

An award to the Unit and Counry that donates the greatest amount of money to a program that serves children with special needs to include but not limited to United Cerebral Palsy, Catholic Charities and programs for vision and hearing impaired The Unit Treasurer or County Treasurer must certify the amount donated to the Charity. The total donation is to one Chanty '

Awarded lo Units and Counties in two categories:

Unit Award County Award
Category I - 10 to 100 members   Category I - 100 to 1000 members
Category II - 101 members and over   Category II - 1001 member and over

Priscilla Imburgia Award
To the Unit, Children & Youth Chairman who gives the largest donation to the Child Welfare Foundation.

Violet Argila Plaque plus $100 cash award
To the Unit reporting the best year round program for children with special needs. (Children with learning disabilities, behavioral problems, speech, hearing and visually impaired mental retardation or physical disabilities).

Kay Mazzie Award
To the Unit reporting the best year round Children & Youth program with emphasis on activities as set forth annually by the American Legion.  Awarded to the Unit in two membership categories:

  1. Category I    10-100 Members

  2. Category II   101 Members and above.

Shirley Olinger Award
To the Unit, submitting the most outstanding report on “Under Our Wings”, program.
“Under our Wings’, we need to reach out to the families around us who need a little help throughout the year.  Many Units adopt a family or families and provide them with things on all special occasions and in between, if the need arises.

Department County Award
To the County reporting the best year round Children & Youth program with emphasis on activities as set forth annually by the American Legion.

Evelyn Sheldon Award
Youth Reaches Out” - Awarded to a youth group or an individual youth in recognition of service to their community or fellow man.  The recipient does not have to be affiliated with the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary.  The important thing is that they are making life better for someone in their community.

Rules for “Youth Reaches Out”, award.

  1. Entry must be typed; double spaced on 81/2 X 11 paper and shall not exceed 500 words.

  2. Entry must be in narrative for, enclosed in a folder telling about “Out Reach”, activities of a group or individual.

  3. Entry must contain a flyleaf with a Unit name and Number and the name, address and phone number of both the Unit President and the Unit Children & Youth Chairman.

Note:  The “Youth Reaches Out”, award will be presented to the nominating Unit at the Department Convention. The Unit will accept the responsibility for presenting the award to the recipient at an appropriate time and place. The nominating Unit will receive a certificate of appreciation.

All entries for Department and National Awards must be received by the Department Children & Youth Chairman no later than May 10, 2010

 National Award

"Outstanding" Promotion of Supporting Activities – Unit Award
An award presented to the unit Children & Youth Chairman in each division who promotes the Most Outstanding Program promoting any or all of the identified ALA activities. Entry must be in narrative form not to exceed 1,000 words and must include a completed copy of the Annual Unit report form, Department Children & Youth Chairman judges Unit entries and selects a winner and forwards the entry to the National Children & Youth Vice Chairman, Betsy Lee Hodges, 102 Dogwood Dr., Washington NC 27889-5410. Award Entry Form # 2 is to be used.
 

Child Welfare Foundation Awards by the American Legion

  1. Legacy Award:
    A plaque presented at National Convention to the top department based on combined total contributions of the American Legion Family and Eight & Forty contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation during contribution year (June 1, 2009 through May 31, 2010).
     

  2. Garland M. Murphy, Jr. Award:
    A plaque presented to one department from each organization of Legion family with the greatest contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation during contribution year.
     

  3. Excellence Award:
    A plaque presented to one of ten Departments from each organization of Legion family with the highest per capita contribution average for the contribution year. Citations mailed to the runners-up.
     

  4. "Heritage Circle" Gift Club:
    A plaque presented to Departments of The American Legion Family and Eight & Forty for their cumulative donations during the contribution year. Plaques will be mailed September 1, 2009 Benefactor - $5000 Patron - $2500
    Sponsor - $1000
     

  5. Meritorious Achievement Award:
    A plaque presented to the top department in each organization with the highest increase in per capita giving to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation during contribution year.
     

  6. "Children First" Gift Club:
    A plaque presented to organization (Post, Unit, Squadron) for their cumulative donation made during the contribution year. Guardian - $1,000     Advocate - $750.00        Caretaker - $500
     

  7. "Cornerstone" Gift Club: A pin awarded to individuals for their cumulative donations made during the contribution year
    Foundation Ambassadors-$1,000, President’s Circle-$500, Foundation Partners-$250, Century Club-$100
