Americanism Youth Conference at Freedoms Foundation

Valley Forge, Pennsylvania  


The Americanism Youth Conference is a unique program for high school students (grades 10 -12) offering a rare opportunity for participation in a 4-day residential program at the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Penn. Focused on the discussion of current issues facing the United States sessions and seminars approach these issues from a historical and global perspective on constitutional law and government. The program allows students to explore within themselves interpersonal skills and leadership potential. Participation is by invitation only and based on application and essay.

The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, founded in 1949, celebrates the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights and their relevance to our daily lives. Their goal is to educate and inspire students and their teachers with the words, meanings and emotions that these founding documents convey, utilizing interactive programs that explore our history and debates that focus on Constitutional concepts in this changing world.

The 2011 program is scheduled for (To be Announced.) Participating students will have all registration costs covered and receive a travel stipend to attend.

Topic:
" How Can I Encourage My Friends to Show Pride in Being an American?"
Word Limit: 500
Format: Must be typed,  not hand written!!!

Submission Instructions:
Submit to the sponsoring Auxiliary unit president, post or squadron commander or designee by
December 1, 2010

Judging and Announcement of Winners:
Judging
is done on a department (state) level.
Essays will be evaluated on message and content.
Applications will be reviewed for extra-curricular activities including community service.
Students chosen to represent their state in the Youth Conference will be notified by  Mid January 2011.

Expenses Paid for All Winners:
Students selected to participate in the Americanism Youth Conference will have their program fee paid by
the American Legion Auxiliary sponsoring department or unit. These fees cover program cost, room and
board, and transportation to and from the Philadelphia Airport. In addition, students may be eligible for a stipend up to $200 to cover travel expenses to and from Valley Forge. There are no other expenses associated with the trip; students may choose to bring money to cover discretionary spending while on trips
